
Basil Halperin
Basil Halperin is a macroeconomist studying monetary economics as well as the economics of artificial intelligence. His work on monetary policy focuses on the question of optimal monetary policy: what should central banks do? His work on AI considers the implications of AI for economic growth, theoretically and empirically.
Halperin earned his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and spent a year as a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab before joining UVA. He previously earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Chicago, and worked as a data scientist at Uber and as a quantitative research at AQR Capital Management.
He will be teaching intermediate macroeconomics this fall and a graduate macro course in the spring.
