Calculus Requirement
Important changes to the Economics major requirements
Beginning August 1, 2024:
- Calculus II will no longer be a prerequisite to take ECON 3010 or any other required course for the major
- ECON 3010 classes will begin with coverage of math concepts necessary for student success in the course.
- The Department will post videos on the UVA Economics website that reinforce important math concepts.
- Calculus II will still be a prerequisite for some courses, including ECON 3110, ECON 4720, and a few other 4000-level courses.
- Completion of Calculus II will no longer be required to declare the Economics major.
- Students must earn a C+ or higher in Calculus I (Math 1210, Math 1310, APMA 1090) to declare an Economics major.
Before August 1, 2024:
Existing rules still apply. In particular, students must complete Calculus II (with C+ or higher) in order to declare the Economics major, and Calculus II is a prerequisite for ECON 3010 in the Spring and Summer sessions of 2024.
