Self-assessment is an important step for anyone considering their next pursuits, whether that be an internship or full-time job.
Assessing your skills, interests, values, and abilities may take many forms. The ECO will go so far as to say that an honest and thorough assessment of one's skills, knowledge, values, and personal atrributes can be life-altering. Below, the ECO has provided a self-assessment to get you started in your job search. A companion piece, the Personal Strategic Career Plan, will help you put it all together as the foundation for your internship/job search strategy. For widely used and industry-standard self assessments the ECO recommends the Career Leader.
Below is a list of ECO-Recommended Assessment tools.
MBTI, PathwayU, Strong Interest Inventory
MBTI - Highly Recommended assessment you may access through the UVA Career Center.
PathwayU - Highly Recommended assessment, which is a platform with assessments to help you identify education and career pathways that fit you and make the most sense for your unique interests and values. Your results will include a list of job titles/functions that may be a good fit for you based on others, who are happy in their jobs and responded similarly to you in the assessment.
Strong Interest Inventory - Highly Recommended assessment. You may take this through the ECO.
Meet with the ECO career counselor to discuss your interests, skills, abilities, and personal goals. Then determine next steps and which assessments, if any, you may consider.
