SHINE Paid Business Internship

Business Intern (HUBZone only)

SHINE Systems, an SBA-certified HUBZone small business headquartered in Charlottesville, is looking for interns to contribute and learn with our business. HUBZone-area residents (see requirements below) from any academic major and class year are welcome to apply. These are paid positions and require exactly 40 hours of work per month. We hire at intervals throughout the year (starting dates are always at the beginning of a month), and an internship can potentially last longer than a semester if it is a good fit for both the student and SHINE System. The required 40 hours/month can be organized around student schedules, and remote work is possible due to COVID precautions. (Note: We are not able to provide access to security clearances with this internship.)

Assignments vary depending on the intern’s interests and skillsets, as well as SHINE System’s needs, but all interns gain valuable experience with Microsoft Office 365 Enterprise, particularly SharePoint. Tasks/activities may include (but are not limited to) business development, operations, proposals, contracting, and research.

Examples:

  • Perform agency/opportunity research
  • Manage/update business opportunity pipelines
  • Support recruiting research and documentation
  • Complete various research projects (industry competition, federal and defense projects)
  • Support project management
  • Develop and streamline business processes
  • Support SHINE’s ventures into cybersecurity

 Requirements

  1. Be a resident in a qualified HUBZone (this is non-negotiable):
    • Check the status of your current address at: https://maps.certify.sba.gov/hubzone/map. (Expiring HUBZones may qualify if they are scheduled as a HUBZone during the period of the internship. On-campus residences at UVA are generally in a HUBZone.)
    • Finalists will be required to demonstrate residence within a HUBZone before receiving an offer letter (e.g., a valid, unexpired Driver's License, State Identification Card, Voter Registration card, utility bill, or lease agreement). Similar documents are required at regular intervals to attest to continued HUBZone eligibility throughout the course of the internship.
  2. Ability to work exactly 40 hours a month
  3. Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
  4. Provide university enrollment status documents
