SBA OFFICE OF ADVOCACY ECONOMIC RESEARCH FELLOW

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy is the voice for small business
within the federal government. The office examines the role and contributions of small
businesses in the U.S. economy, and advocates for small business interests before federal
agencies, Congress, the White House, and the public.
Advocacy’s team of economists produces small business research and statistics, and analyzes
the small business impacts of federal polices and regulations. As the only federal agency with
this mandate, Advocacy’s products are used by policymakers, news organizations, and trade
associations to illustrate the importance of small businesses and the challenges they face.
JOB DUTIES
The Economic Research Fellow reports to the Director of Economic Research and works with
Advocacy’s team of economists to carry out a variety of economic research activities. The
Economic Research Fellow may be responsible for developing products such as small business
fact sheets, infographics, and issue briefs. The Economic Research Fellow may be required to:
 Analyze and prepare large publicly available datasets for dissemination to
congressional staff and media outlets, and for use in Advocacy research products.
 Complete quick-turnaround data assignments in a dynamic work environment.
 Support Advocacy economists with internal research projects.
 Help create new publications and information products, including by working with our
external affairs office and graphic designer.
 Communicate analyses to Advocacy’s senior leadership and outside constituents on
economic issues salient to small businesses.
 Plan, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
 Complete, by the end of the term, a research project on a small business topic for
publication by Advocacy.
 Perform other duties as assigned.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
 Strong analytical capabilities, with an aptitude for quantitative analysis.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment and produce accurate work product
under tight deadlines.
 Experience with Microsoft Excel and other statistical software, such as Stata, R, SAS, etc.
 Experience with data query tools such as the U.S. Census Bureau’s American FactFinder.

 Familiarity with large, publicly available datasets, such as those produced by the U.S.
Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
QUALIFICATIONS:
 At least one year of professional experience in a related position.
 Master’s degree in economics, public policy, business, or a related field preferred.
Qualified Bachelor’s degree candidates will also be considered.
 Coursework in economics, statistics, public policy, and/or econometrics.
 Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and good judgement.
 Familiarity with, or interest in, small business issues.
TERM OF POSITION
This position is for a one year term.
