The European Union, conceived from the ashes of a war-torn continent nearly 70 years ago, today faces a collection of threats that might genuinely be termed existential. Record immigration, the evolving reality of Brexit, chronic levels of underemployment, stresses on the Euro, invigorated nationalism, and a range of governance challenges are all testing at least the contours, and perhaps the very existence of the Union.
